how is the new tv show the mentalist any different than 'psych'?

per BGH:
Two differences:
1. Not funny.
2. It will be cancelled in a month.

there is one other very important difference matthew - that i am sure patty would agree with - simon baker is about 300 times hotter than james roday.

per BGH: Patty loves Psych. It is one of her overwhelming favorites. Dule Hill is her secret boyfriend. Pretty sure she thinks Simon Baker is a douche.

per cmarv: The show was OK. After seeing the entire thing it was semi compelling. But still, in comparison to Life, which has a similar premise of someone losing everything and coming back to do good afterward, I don't love it. Life's character at least is looking for revenge. This guy has already gotten that! In the first episode. They could have strung it out over many years, now the show is going to be like any other episodic drama

per BGH: Patrick specifically stated that it was a copy cat crime due to the position of the smiley face. That contention was supported by his observation that there were several books in the doctor's office that had chapters covering Red John. Clearly vengeance is yet to be had.

That said, you are spot on with the Life reference. Life meets Psych, so far does not make for must see TV.

i love psych too. i love dule and i love corbin. i just wanted to point out that while he might be a douche, he is super hot. your reason #2 was it would be cancelled in a month, which i disagree with as cbs keeps a lot of shows on just because the actors are super hot. ie, boob whisperer or that vampire show for a full season even though it was really really bad.
