is ANYONE following the news ratings race between the networks?

Katie Couric has been losing shares right and left. She hasn't even come close to Chuck or Brian since the first week she was on the air. Does this imply that television watchers don't want the dumbed-down version of the news? Or that television watchers that might relate to Katie's cheerleader charms don't participate in the nightly news ritual? My gut says the latter.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Update: For the week of March 26, 2007, ABC's World News Tonight with Charles Gibson and NBC's Nightly News with Brian Williams finished in a dead heat among A25-54 ratings, tho NBC pulled ahead in total viewers. The official results are:
  • NBC: 8.08 million total viewers; 2.0/9 A25-54
  • ABC: 7.93 million total viewers; 2.0/9 A25-54
  • CBS: 6.16 million total viewers; 1.5/7 A25-54

I prefer ABC. I've watched it at least 3 times in the last month and enjoyed it. I have not seen Katie. I cannot understand how she is qualified to be a network news anchor.

I really like Charles Gibson. And I was a bit surprised when ABC didn't put him in immediately. They tried a two-person approach which completely blew up (pun intended). It was a good try I think by CBS. I think she will get better with time. It's tough because of all the double-standard bullshit between men and women. People probably want to see a young, good-looking woman reading the news if it's a woman. For a man - an older gentleman (but not too old, and who at least doesn't look mentally ill) probably makes people feel more confident in the veracity of the news being delivered. But maybe not - times change. It's going to be tough for Katie - she's starting to look older. I'm not sure she'll last long with those poor ratings. Ratings in general for the evening news seem pretty low. Do people care about evening news anymore? I have probably seen it 0 times this month. I'm not sure people depend on it as much now that there are so many 24-hour news sources. Should be interesting to see who wins the race, and what happens with the evening news overall.
